AERRIUM

by Eva Maignen & Juliette Delavenne

“Aerrium” is a vessel combining research and observation of both the atmosphere and underwater life. It combines the structural principles of the “polar pod” project–a vertical floating vessel to navigate the Southern Ocean around Antarctica and gather data– with the elegant form of a jellyfish. Above the water, scientists and visitors use the star observatory, research centre, and living spaces. Below the surface, a detachable vessel enables observation of greater depth, and sound sensors like jellyfish entrails provide access to the Barents Sea soundscape. The Aerrium is steered by currents alone, and energy is supplied by wind turbines on the upper deck.

Seasonal fish movement, currents, and the location of the ice-edge all strategically determine the Aerrium’s location in the Barents Sea, where over around 5 years, it develops as a habitat, a form of artificial reef.
