OCEAN STORIES
by Nora Håskjold
Ocean Stories explores methods of imagining and capturing an ocean-based dialogue.
Four books: Confessions of the Wind, A Dialogue About Time, Process of Decomposing, and Oceanic Stories (a collection of poems) each have a specific literary format, materiality, and convey the perspective of a different ocean protagonist.
The hand-made books both contain and set the stories free. The wind’s words whisper through tracing paper- partially visible in dialogue with words on the current page. The pages crackle. Etchings and prints made with ocean plastic complemented the text, as well as thick, sculpted pages, cut out in silhouette. One cover is made of algae bioplastic. The crafting of the books is a way to enter the dialogue and “convey, transform or shape the idea or notion of the ocean”.
In the final exhibition, some words had also escaped and found a new form of expression directly on the prison walls.
