Plagptera
A Creature of the Sea

Judith Krüger

During this course, I realized that there are an awful lot of things wrong with our oceans that we just do not see. If things are not pretty we tend to look away. None of the things I discovered were new but we do not want to look at them long enough. My project is a mind game to make the observer think about things we normally like to avoid in form of an animal documentary video of an undefined moment in the near future.

In a colorful set up of plastic collected from the waters around Bergen harbor, a creature made of this plastic enters the ocean. The audience follows the plasticwaterfly into its pretty world with is a weave of facts and a little bit of added mystery when it comes to the creature itself. Visualizing the anatomy of the creature’s ancestor as well as mapping the north sea a lot of detail is added.

At what point do we leave reality? And then it is important to ask yourself why do I think this is unlikely.

The oceans are heavily polluted by plastics and microplastics and there is no end to be seen when it comes to the amounts of plastic entering our oceans. Plastics are full of chemicals and affect nature and humans alike in unpredictable ways.
