RADIO OCEAN SPACE
by Edward Janssen, Didric Brännerud & Katrine Albriktsen Mathisen
With Radio Ocean Space, we aim to create a radio station that functions as a mediator between humans and the sea. Using our self-built infrastructure, we engage in dialogue with the sea and explore a shared immaterial space. By asking questions, sharing stories, and listening, we seek the sea's responses in the form of sound waves, the rhythm of water, underwater acoustics, and its eternal elusiveness.
THE MEDIATOR
The sea as a space of absolute freedom was explored by pirate radio stations in the 1960s. The sea became a refuge, offering radio creators the liberty to speak freely and break away from established structures. It was a space of creative rebellion, a new domain for connection and exchange. Both the sea and radio share an invisible, immaterial space, a common ground of sound and movement.
The sea is not static but ever changing, and this dynamic nature is shared with radio. Neither the immaterial space of radio nor the ocean is ever the same, both are fleeting, mutable, and intangible. This makes them ideal mediums to explore questions of change, reflection, and imagination. In this project, the radio is not merely a tool for broadcasting but also an eardrum, attuned to listen and resonate with the sea.
Both the sea and radio, with their shared immaterial space, are realms where sound and communication take center stage. The radio becomes a platform where stories, questions, and answers converge, creating a space for mutual interaction and understanding. By capturing the sounds of the sea, we aim to make this shared space tangible and to inspire the imagination of our listeners.
