The Seacademy transforms the Aida cruise-ship into an academy with a philosophy of learning, liberation from everyday life, experiencing the sea, and the phytoplankton bloom, and providing a place of exchange between scholars, scientists and artists. The Seacademy´s philosophy dismantles hierarchies, is accessible for all of legal age that wish to contribute, embracing inclusivity and diverse perspectives. The ship has pledged to follow the UN Human Rights constitution – all beings, regardless of race, sex, nationality, ethnicity, language, religion, or any other status are equal.
The “slow learning pedagogy” is inspired by Plato’s academy but at the theory and practice are equally valued and both activities are reflected Seacademy in the ships program and schedule.
Aidaprima follows a slow route at 0.1 knots around the Barents Sea over the course of 365 days– moving using minimal energy, and encouraging a deeper engagement with the environment and with oneself. It also means a reduction in underwater noise and a reduced risk of ships colliding with whales (known as ship strikes).
The Seacademy invites The Marine Mammal Observer Association to partake on board- a membership based association with the aim of bringing together and representing individuals who work
professionally as Marine Mammal Observers (MMOs) and Passive Acoustic Monitoring (PAM) Operators to implement mitigation measures and protect marine life.
