TANA RIVER STORIES

by Saskia Smink

“Stories of the Tana River” is a tribute to the salmon and the people of the Deatnu/Tana river region. It follows the salmon, telling its stories through the voices of locals, scientists, and experts, intersected with the “voice” of the salmon itself.

The project illustrates the current moratorium on salmon fishing in Deatnu/Tana river and its devastating socio-cultural effects, on the invasive pink salmon introduced by Russia, and on the pros and cons of salmon aquaculture. The etching technique used to develop the video is inspired by the artist Alanis Obomsawin (see researching artists).
