The Invisible Depths of the Ocean

Kirsten Remmers

Everyone has a small imagination about the problem with pollution in the ocean and sometimes we can see the problem on the surface. The unbelievable size and depths of the ocean makes it hard for us to understand the problem on the ground of the ocean. Therefore, I started to work with an aquarium. An aquarium tries to show the beauty and habitat on the ground of the ocean to everyone. I used the aquarium to show a shocking futuristic section through the ground of the ocean. The model should be used as an awareness model, to show how the ground of the ocean could look like, if we´re not taking care of our environment. There are different rules and laws about where we are allowed to threw our trash in the Ocean but it is still unbelievable that it is allowed. That we can´t see the problem with the marine litter and the pollution, doesn´t mean that the problem is solved and our trash is gone. All the various kinds of material could stay for a few months up to several years in the ocean. The sun, waves, temperature, salt and wind has an impact on the size of the material and in which condition we can find it on the beach or the ground. The drawings should show the impact from our behaviour to our environment and the influence from the nature to the distribution from marine litter in the ocean. The old abandoned oil platform “Deep Sea Bergen” should be reused to open a research- and visitor centre in the North Sea and should float on the petroleum grid. The trashbot should make pictures and collect marine litter on the ground of the ocean before scientists can register all information and throw the trash in huge bags.
