THE LAST SALMON
by Atso Airola & Luna Scéau
‘The last salmon’ is a space-specific audio/video walk that speculates on the acoustic conditions of salmon and the current state of salmon farming in Norway. In the walk, participants are visually and aurally guided through space with the help of their phones and headphones. From their phone screens, participants follow a series of pre-recorded events that make them enter and navigate the experience of a migrating wild salmon swimming through the space. They follow the salmon’s journey starting from the river, swimming through the fjord, entering the open sea, and ending back in the river.
The video walk is inspired by the work of Janet Cardiff. Cardiff is an artist who uses multimedia sound installations and audio/video walks to immerse people in some environments or stories that she creates. In her video walks, physical presence and motion in the space, together with pre-recorded events on the screen, create a double reality, where the fictional world of the film blends with the reality of the architecture and body in motion.
